About this trip

Adult Summer Camp in Alaska 🏕️...Under the Midnight Sun ☀️

Time to rep the 'ville up in the 49th state! We're headed up to a beautiful place in the Last Frontier on the Kenai Peninsula. Seward is a small town with a big heart and deep roots in Alaska's indigenous and maritime histories. Cool but comfy summer temps, spectacular mountains, approachable adventure, and cozy quarters are the backdrop for summer camp in 2027.

This 6-day/5-night gathering will see us get away from sweltering heat, head to mountains that overlook the ocean, and sample the best of Alaska...under a sun that never seems to set.

With almost 24 hours of daylight each day, there will be time for everything: walking on a glacier, sea kayaking, fishing for legendary halibut and salmon, whale watching and puffin spotting by boat, and immersing ourselves in Last Frontier fun with old friends.

This is the way to do and see Alaska; in a group big enough to have a blast at a private property, yet small enough to enjoy private tours. Big ships cruise past it, but we'll take you inside of it.

Summer in Alaska is glorious and the Kenai Peninsula is our playground.

Our Base Camp for Adventure

The Nauti Otter yurt village will be our base for fun under the sun.

The Nauti Otter is a compound of comfy glamp-style yurts on private forested property close to town. At the center of the property is a covered deck for group dining with a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and plenty of space to visit, connect over a campfire, or just hang in a hammock and relax.

Each yurt has the look and feel of a cozy bedroom. Featuring Alaskan decor, the yurts have electricity and are warmed (if necessary) by a free-standing heater. Private washrooms are located at the center of the property and are shared by all yurt guests, while two accommodations (the quad cabin and the tiny home) have full amenities, including kitchen, washroom, and seating areas.

The capacity for this trip is 20-30 guests for a full-property takeover. It's a super fun trip which sees us enjoying great meals and lively fires together (when we're not outdoors doing all the Alaska things).

Booking and Cancellation

Securing lodging, meals, and activities for a group of this size in rural Alaska is no small feat. The cancellation policy offers as much flexibility and security as is possible for all. A non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your spot with the balance of trip fees paid in equal installments over time (interest free). The full cancellation schedule is available for review upon registration.

Day 1

Arrive in Seward

Travel from Anchorage to/from Seward:

You can choose between renting a car at Anchorage International or the Alaska Railroad.

If you'd prefer renting a car, you'll drive the 120 miles to Seward. You can arrive mid-day and meet up with the train travelers or arrive after check in (3pm) and head straight to the Nauti Otter. During our pre-trip meeting, we'll chat about rental vehicles and car pooling.

The Alaska Railroad departs Anchorage in the morning and arrives in Seward before noon. If you're arriving by rail, you'll arrange for your luggage to be picked up and delivered to the Nauti Otter, while you have lunch and explore the town. Once check in time rolls around (3pm) you'll take a cab to our yurt village, where your luggage will be waiting for you.

Either way, we'll all land at the Otter late afternoon, unpack, freshen up, and enjoy happy hour together. This evening will feature dinner prepared and cooked on site by our private chef.

Day 2

The Fun Begins!

The outdoor kitchen will be stocked with provisions and the coffee pot will be on. Breakfast each morning will be at a time that works for you (and fits your activity schedule for the day). Our open air kitchen is fully equipped and features a pancake and waffle station, a toaster, several Blackstone griddles, and a stove and oven. You can hit it hard (eggs, bacon, hash browns, pancakes) or light (yogurt, toast, fruit, and other fixings).

After breakfast, if you've chosen the Iditarod Kennel Tour, we'll go visit the dawgs. A few minutes away, we'll tour a real working sled dog kennel with dozens of K-9s who have run and are in training for the race. We'll learn about the unique sport's culture and logistics, and be treated to a summer mushing session. We'll also get a chance to meet new recruits (puppies!) and take long whiffs of their breath.

Returning to the yurt village, we'll have a catered lunch on site. A variety of delicious sandwiches and charcuterie boards will be waiting, ready for us to graze on throughout the afternoon.

The second part of this day will be mostly about relaxing and visiting around a campfire. There will also be time to take a short drive to town and visit the aquarium, peruse gift and coffee shops, and see the small boat harbor. Dinner will be in town and on our own, either as one group or several (depending on who wishes to go where).

Day 3

Stretching Our Legs

Day 3 is Hike Day - from mild to wild!

After breakfast, if you've chosen a hike, you'll be heading into town to meet your guides. You'll have two choices here: either a 2-hour naturalist walk or a full day hike on and around Exit Glacier (specs outlined during registration and check out).

If you choose the naturalist hike, you'll be back in town in time to enjoy lunch on your own. If you're on the all-day adventure, your guides will have a packed lunch for you (several options available and ordered ahead of time).

The rest of the day is blocked open. If you didn't hike, you'll have a full day on your own. If you did the shorter outing, the afternoon is all yours. The longer hike will come in right before dinner.

With one more dinner on everyone's own, you'll have a chance to sample the restaurant you missed the night before.

Day 4

Fish. ON!

Day 4 gives us the Big Fishing Trip.

J-Dock Fishing is taking everyone who wants to go, FISHING. This is a full day (up to 12 hours) saltwater safari on the hunt for halibut, rock fish, ling cod, and salmon.

The Captain and his crew will have our boats ready early and the ride will take us out through Resurrection Bay, some of the most stunning scenery in the U.S.

Called a "multi-species combo trip", this day will see us pulling all kinds of fish out of the water. We'll go till we reach a limit - either limiting out due to regulations or just plain done pulling them in. When we return to the harbor, we'll cart our catch over to their custom processor, who will cut, vacuum pack, and freeze our fish for the trip home (minus one or two for dinner that night?).

Our evening meal will be provided by our private chef at camp.

Day 5

Out on the water, low and slow

It's kayak day!

There are two trips to choose from: a half day launching from shore near town or a full day that includes a boat tour.

The half day sees you gliding around the bay, following the coast line. It's a beautiful trip surrounded by rugged mountains and abundant wildlife. You can look out for eagles, harbor seals, sea lions, and otters. It features a break to enjoy snacks and hot drinks on a remote beach. You'll return in time for lunch on your own.

The full day kayak trip is the flagship outing for our guiding company. It combines a wildlife boat tour and glacier kayaking in Kenai Fjords National Park. You'll travel on a small, purpose-built boat, see additional wildlife such as whales and puffins, and paddle near the largest & most active glacier in the park. A packed lunch is included on this adventure.

When we all return to the yurt village later in the day, we'll enjoy our last dinner together prepared on site by our private chef.

Day 6

Day 6 image

Departing the Kenai

Our last day will have us checking out by 11am. Travel back to Anchorage is by your rental car or train. The train typically leaves later in the afternoon, so traveling this route will see you storing your luggage with the service who delivered it then checking it once you arrive at the train depot.

I'll be holding two online video meetings in February and April to help everyone plan, prepare, and pack for the trip. During these sessions, I'll provide details on all ground transportation options, as well as tips for other places in Alaska you may want to visit (if you come up early or stay after our week together - recommended!). I'll record this session and send it out to everyone for reference.

This is the way to do and see Alaska; in a group big enough to have a blast but small enough to buy out properties and enjoy private tours. As a former resident of Alaska who has had a lot of fun up here, I hope you'll join us. I love sharing the beauty, culture, and friendliness of the Last Frontier, especially in summer under the Midnight Sun.
